PART 1

The Great Acro AI Experiment – July 2026

Confession time: I used ChatGPT as a brainstorming partner for one game to see whether AI could compete with a room full of Acro veterans. I told everyone after I won and then exited so people could discuss whether this was good, bad, or somewhere in between.

My conclusion: AI is a decent assistant, but 25 years of Acro culture, instincts, and shared history still matter much more than raw word generation.

The experiment taught me that Acro has a lot of unwritten rules that took decades to develop:

One thought, one sentence.
No punctuation should be necessary.
Every word must earn its place.
No throwaway endings unless they are the punchline.
The best players think from the topic to the letters, not the other way around.
Specific images and ordinary speech often beat abstract ideas.

I described my own Acro style to the AI as humorous, thoughtful, kind, irreverent, factual when appropriate, occasionally R-rated if the topic deserved it, and avoiding corporate or fake inspirational language.

The AI quickly learned that Pander topics belong to the humans because inside jokes and 25 years of shared experience cannot be downloaded.

Classic examples we discussed included:

The Cheese Stands Alone (my old Acro from the nursery rhyme)
Los Angeles Traffic Terrible (an original Acrophobia example showing how much the game has evolved)

Some memorable Acros from the evening included:

Dumplings Or Manicotti You Sharing
Tickles While Very Unusually Seeming Weird
Peabody Smells Foul RR Wears Tutu Backwards
Licorice Berries Apples
Surviving Means Isnt Dead
That Love Prevails
So True / Dont Worry
Im On Random Podcasts Frequently
Stupid Hair Wont Regrow Thats That
Love Those Mimosas On Sunday Afternoon

PART 2

Some AI-assisted entries that did well included:

Everyone Craves Understanding (winner)
Are Aliens Hiding Here Again (winner)
Love Tolerates Many Odd Small Annoyances (second place)
Sometimes Housework Will Remain There Tomorrow (second place)
A Happy Thought Can Nurture Resilient Hearts (11 points and the winning Acro)

The AI also learned about all of our strange and wonderful topic types:

General Acro
Rhyme Time
A + B = C
Word Trains
Syllable patterns
Pander rounds
Two two-word phrases
Contractions
Interrupted thoughts
Admit something to yourself
What can I say?

One of the biggest lessons was that great Acro players do not start with the letters. They start with the universe of ideas suggested by the topic and then make the letters fit. The AI naturally wanted to do the opposite.

The final result of the experiment was that I won with 40 points. My opinion is that AI alone would probably be an average player in our room, but a human Acro veteran using AI as a brainstorming partner can be stronger than either one alone.

Most importantly, I came away appreciating even more how much Acro has evolved since the old Acrophobia days. The game is no longer just making phrases from letters. It is a creative culture with its own traditions, expectations, humor, and history, kept alive by a small group of faithful players.

And if Michael ever pulls the plug, I hope we find a way to keep that culture going.

Shel it was a fun experiment. Can AI vote? I'm with you 100 on playing acro together for many years. :)
